They . . . did a lot of things. The Calamity was just a memory of the Planet for a long time, until the Shinra dug her up.

Shinra, they just wanted power. They thought if they had a Cetra for their own, they could gain the power of the Promised Land, like it's something that could be possessed. The professor, he said he wanted to make another Cetra. I don't know if he really thought that was what he was doing.
