[shrugs] You can get away with a lot of crap when you're new. Up to and including sarcasm to people who actually know what's going on.

So tell me how it is.

Okay. You wake up, you got no memories. We're told that we get all our memories back plus a wish at the end of this -- that's all of us in black that live here. Some of us vets know what we came in to wish for, but a lot of the newer people don't. You'll get a berry or something every couple of days that will let you remember something. Usually at random -- I've gotten 'every time I ordered take-out food', then the next week, I get fighting someone to the death.

We're working for the Judges, who are these disembodied spirits that sometimes come to visit, usually possessing animals. They tell us to do things, and we do it. There's other people, living above us, that play in dangerous games for their wishes -- usually our orders involve doing things to the Blanks, the players in the games. They'll be in different color clothing, and they aren't allowed down here, unless they're doing something for us as a favor. A couple of them come down to cook us dinner in exchange for extra food to bring back.

As much as anything is normal around here.

Huh. Guess I'm counting it as normal until I learn otherwise then.

So what'd you come here for then? Since you know.

My apprentice was killed, and this was my last resort to get him back. Or at least find out where his soul went, instead of to the afterlife.

Well hey, apparently we get lots of chances here...?

Yeah. But it explains a lot about the people who work here -- we're all some combination of crazy, dumb or desperate. I don't know much about the Blanks' motivations, or about a lot of the new people. A month or so back, Beauty -- that's one of the Judges -- called us all in for orientation, and that's when I learned why I was here.

I guess desperate seems about right. Hey, how come we just get this paper?

[thumping open the binder with all the profiles of people, pulling out the brochure with the Rules written on it]

Yeah, unless someone comes around and gives you more instructions. Sometimes there are special orders.

So no idea if the new guys get told why we're here...

As far as I know, they've only done it once.
