Why, if I may ask? Not that I doubt the strategic value...

Partly because the fewer insane Judges, the better; especially the Judge associated with water. I haven't seen a spider since Surgeon died, and that was one of his associations -- think about what would happen if we lost Waterbearer.

But mostly because there was something I could do; he was suffering and I had a chance to help relieve it at no cost to myself. Not taking that opportunity would have been cruel, in a way, and Waterbearer's never done anything to us before today that would justify turning my back on him.

I suspected something similar. However, I hadn't realized the extent of what could hang in the balance. Is there anything any of us can do to help?

Make sure you only use that name inside the dorms, for one; it's knowledge gained from the past, and King hates it when we display that too openly. Other than that...I'm not sure yet.

...hmm. There are suggestions of that in the old memories, but mostly why I did it is to give him a solid reminder of his identity. He's effectively being invaded and corrupted by the Old Man, and the stronger his sense of self, the easier I'm hoping it will be for him to recover.

Does the Old Man gain anything by taking over judges? Or was it just coincidental? Does the Old Man have a vested interest in not letting Waterbearer go?
