[there is a cave lawyer with a journal and a bracelet knocking at your door!]

(Get lost, nearly starve to death in a cave for almost a week, and sleep for an entire day, and the population explodes. I really have to keep better track.)

I-it's just a little cracked! I think I can fix it, if I sync again, I just need to be in the right frame of mind, so.

[Takes him by the shoulders, careful of his injuries, and guides him down into one of their chairs.]

Um-- It's fine, you don't have to. . . I'm not really sure. I feel like there's something I've forgotten, but I can almost grasp it.

[Kneels in front of him, not so much taking his hands as letting them rest over hers.]

'Synching' . . . is that . . . in other words, harmony?

My Innocence. . . I don't think I fully understand everything about it. But we have to understand each other, in order to really act as one. It's easier for Exorcists like me, where it's a part of my body, but it's still not quite "me". . .

I feel like we could keep from being broken like this. But it's just a feeling, and that won't really cut it.

It actually got so low once that I couldn't sync up at all. I don't remember what fixed it yet. But I remember what the problem was. . .

It was totally broken down. I was completely defeated.

[Looks down at his creaky, cracked hand, turning it over in hers, thumb brushing the skin beside the cross.]

After that . . . was your connection stronger, do you think?

[his hand twitches a bit, but he doesn't pull it away]

The way it winds together with me, it wasn't like this before. It was just attached at one point, right here. [taps below his deltoids] I think as it is now, it's done evolving. . . I survived it being "destroyed" before, but I don't know if I'd be able to just separate from it again.

Maybe that's why I can still synchronize, even though my will is nothing like I once was and it's all the way down to fifty-one like this.

Ah, yeah. It has a lot to do with that. An exorcist's will and heart. . . the Innocence can refuse it.

Or default it.

What does 'default' mean?

Just that. The failure to fulfill the promise you made as an exorcist. Below zero synchronization, probably.

If that's the result of failure . . . would success do the opposite?

This little one . . . it's your heart and will, isn't it? That it responds to. If it can refuse . . . isn't 'synchronization' when it accepts?
