Practicing. There are spells I can't use here, because the Judges forbid them, but it wouldn't do to get completely rusty.

In a way. I used to be able to summon allies to help me fight, but King sealed this plane off from every other one, so I can't anymore. I still know the right spells, though, so I practice every so often.

[There's no strategy involved. He's relying on speed to catch up to it and block off the lizard's escape. Once he manages to pin the pederpe with his front paws, he goes in for the kill - biting down and not letting go until he's satisfied the pederpe is dead.
