*When there are NEW RULES someone has to be out to make sure you kids aren't... wantonly punching walls or going over to each other's dorms for midday sleep overs or anything. Also he wanted to stretch his legs.

A-anyway, um ... what are you doing with the plants today?

Hmm? Which part? The plants need a lot of thing.

I'm not sure. You already talked about the cutting.

Well, there was weeding, and watering and harvesting, though not as much of that last one as I'd like.

Harvesting is when you ... get them? For eating? What are the other two?

Weeding is removing plants that move themselves into your garden. They steal space and resources from whatever you're trying to grow, so you need to get them out. Watering is just bringing water down for the plants. They get all the food they need out of the soil, but water you have to bring to them.

[listens! peers fascinatedly at the plants while she does that.]

How do you tell the difference between a plant and a weed?

Hmm, well, that's basically the difference of what you want there and what you don't want there. Like . . . this little guy.

I don't mind having a few of them, because the leaves taste nice, but new plants keep popping up everywhere else.

And if there's lots of them, the other plants don't get as much food?
