*When there are NEW RULES someone has to be out to make sure you kids aren't... wantonly punching walls or going over to each other's dorms for midday sleep overs or anything. Also he wanted to stretch his legs.

[pauses at the edge of the plot]

Mm, I seem to have a pretty good feel for it, but even for me it's been a lot of trail and error.

[waits patiently]

What are you doing here now? Do you have to be here all the time to get them to like you?

[picking out and easy-to-follow path over]

Well, it depends on the plant. Some of them are much more demanding than others. Right now, though, I'm trying to see if I can use pieces of some other plants to start new ones growing on their own.

[followin' then]

Eh? You're cutting them up? Won't they not like that?

Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. It's actually really important in some cases to cut parts of the plant off, but you have to do that carefully.

... why is it important?

When it's not a part that the plant needs anymore, you can cut it off. That way the plant can take more care of the parts it does need. The part that it lost returns to the soil eventually, though, and becomes nutrition to feed whatever is living there. It might even go back into the same plant eventually if it's lucky.

So it ... gets rid of the part it can't feed? Y-you don't have to do that with people, right?

No, no! All parts of people are important! Don't cut anything off!

I won't! I wasn't planning to!

I was just wondering why Allen wasn't at breakfast. And if we told him to go eat at another team's or something.

No. We don't know why Allen wasn't at breakfast.

Does he do that a lot? Not show up for meals for no reason?

No, he does everything he can to not miss meals. I don't know where Allen is right now.

That's not a good thing, is it.

No, it's not. There's . . . there's a really bad place he could be, but I don't think he's there. We'll go looking later, in case anyone else knows.

It's . . . a piece of this place. A stone. It calls to people sometimes, and then they become a part of it all.

A-anyway, well, it's important to know, but you should ask Spock about it, OK?

[was about to complain about people-eating rocks, but ... p-pauses at that.]

I -- er -- Spock, then. ... and I think Allen would eat the rock before it could eat him.

[laughs] You think so? I hadn't though of that!

He ate dinner really quickly! And he's got that look. The look of a hardened food-eating machine.

Well, you're right about that much. Allen needs more food than most people. He tries to hide it, but . . .
